Free Assistance In Writing Proposals

Proposals are a formal commitment to a particular study – and the key to a successful study or formal dissertation is careful planning at the proposal stage. Your proposal will either set you up for success – or get in the way of it.

It is important to get help, especially if this is your first time establishing a proposal for a body of work, and to make sure that help will guide you in the right direction during this important phase.

Preparing to Seek Assistance

Before you ask for help, it is important that you have established your research question and your methods for completing the study. Though you don’t yet have it formally put to paper, you should have a pretty solid idea of where you plan to go with your project.

Before seeking assistance with the proposal writing process, make sure you can answer some basic questions about your proposed study:

  • What is your research question?
  • What is the nature of the study?
  • Why have you chosen this sponsor?
  • What method of data collection will you use?
  • What method of data analysis will you use?
  • What will be the benefit of this research to the field? The sponsor?
  • Can you answer the research question with the process proposed?
  • How long will it take?

Assistance Available

The Sponsor: Your sponsor and program are your ally in this process. Because their time is limited, and because an incomplete proposal that lacks important data can’t be funded, they have a vested interest in your success at the proposal stage.

  • Explain what kind of funding you are looking for – your sponsor can help you determine whether or not you are on the right track.
  • Ask about proposal guidelines and confirm your understanding of current standards.
  • Request a contact that you can use for editing and review.
  • Inquire about similar proposals – and what processes have proven successful.

Award Recipients: Ask for permission to contact people who have successfully obtained an award from the same sponsor or from within the same field. They can provide valuable insight into the process of not only the proposal stage, but also throughout the rest of the study.

University Staff: Each university has staff available whose specific assignment is to help students submit proposals. Check with your own department to see if there is a contact person that might be available. If not, contact your university’s Contract Office. Contacting staff that deals with proposals every day is a great way to get help with guidelines and budget preparation.

Workshops: Many universities and sponsoring organizations offer proposal writing courses and seminars. There are also other private organizations that offer similar courses for a fee. Most courses take students through the entire process of proposal writing – which can be extremely helpful.

Online Sources: There are many private companies that offer different proposal writing web series. Though some require registration and follow a strict schedule, others allow for student-paced involvement with the use of targeted videos and podcasts.

Once you have written your academic essay, do not rush to submit it to your professor. Spend much time searching for grammar and punctuation mistakes.
