Essay Proofreading Guidelines: Things You Should Consider First Of All

Developing strong essay writing skills is critical to your academic success. One of the most important tasks involved in essay or research report writing is that you proofread every piece of work you intend to submit for grading. Being able to effectively edit and proofread your writing will go a long way in getting you the grades you want.

Here's a list of guidelines that will help to ensure that your work is perfect by the time it makes it way onto your professor's desk.

  1. Be Well Rested

Many writers believe that they are most productive when they write in the afternoon and evening, and then edit the following morning. Proofreading after a good night's sleep, and a hot cup of coffee, will make for more productive editing.

  2. Make A List Of Frequent Mistake And Errors To Look For

We all have strengths and weaknesses when it comes to writing. Know what yours are, and make a list of your most common errors. Be on the lookout for these mistakes every time you edit or proofread your work.

  3. Use Spell And Grammar Check Programs First

These programs can pick up the most obvious errors, but are not foolproof. They are no substitute for a real read through, by a real person!

  4. Read it Out Loud, As Well As Silently

This is especially useful when you want to identify structural or style related weaknesses. Having someone else read your work back to you can be even more helpful. Also, a friend may be able to offer suggestions that will improve the finished product.

  5. Print It Out and Read It

Some of us are quicker to pick up on mistakes that we see on paper, as opposed to those that appear on a computer screen. Also use a blank piece of paper to block out text as you read from top to bottom. Slide the paper down line by line to ensure that you are fully concentrating on each sentence.

  6. Double Check The Little Words

Is it “to”, “two” or “too”? Spell and grammar check programs may not pick up these mistakes.

  7. Double Check Names, Places And Other Odd Words Are Spelled Properly

Foreign names and places are frequently misspelled, and subsequently overlooked. It is common for a writer to use improper spelling the first time they name a person or place and then continue to make the mistake throughout the rest of their work! Don't fall prey to this mistake, it's an easy one to avoid.
