How many times should one edit and proofread dissertation papers?

Dissertation papers are often used to culminate all of what you’ve done in your college career into one final sample of your work. These papers are used to pursue higher levels of education and job acquisition so they are essentially extremely vital to your career. Asking yourself, “How many times should one edit and proofread dissertation papers?” isn’t the mindset to have at all. Go into your paper knowing that you’ll need to go over your paper with a fine comb until you’re completely confident in the results.

Common Mistakes:

  1. Abstract & Review of Topic Confusion
  2. These are two separate sections in your dissertation paper. The abstract is your leading paragraph, summarizing the topic at hand. Do not present your key issues or findings. This is more of a preview of what the dissertation paper will be about.

Your review of the topic/material section is written after your introduction paragraph. This section is where the reader will begin to trust the credibility of your dissertation. Your goal is to present research and other viewpoints that contrast your own. This supports the ideology that despite your stance on the topic, you’ve taken the time to educate yourself on other viewpoints other than your own. In a sense, you’re allowing the reader to form his or her own thoughts.

  3. Communication of Findings
  4. The bulk of your dissertation paper will be presented analysis of your research and subsequent findings regarding the issues you presented in relation to your topic. To effectively communicate these findings, you need to understand the steps you took to get from point A to point B and why the findings are important. If you understand the procedure and you take your time in your explanation, your thought process will be easy to follow.

  5. Conclusion
  6. The worst mistake to make is to write a terrible conclusion to a wonderful dissertation paper. It leaves a bad taste in your reader’s mouth. Your goal for the conclusion is to summarize the information, critique the process you took, and state what you think should happen in the future regarding the topic. Do not get lost in your conclusion and present misguided information or muddled emotional language. Because there will be so much information to essentially summarize, it may be best to write an outline for the conclusion as well.
