How to Edit an Essay: Easy Tips for Eliminating Grammar Mistakes

Editing essays is a big part of the writing process, as almost no one can write a polished, thoughtful essay on the first go with no revisions. There are many things to be done on the editing process such as finding the best way to communicate a point, or better yet refine your ideas to make them more desirable in scope, and otherwise improve the message you are going to communicate. To polish your essay and prepare it for others to view, you are first going to need to make sure that you have things properly spelled with correct grammar.

The first thing you are going to want to do is have someone else read your paper. This is very important. Firstly, when you are reading your own work you are aware of what it is supposed to sound like, so your brain often fixes the words in your head as you read them. Therefore, another person does not have that perspective, so it is often that he/she does not need to feel this particular problem. They can therefore see right away. What is the problem, and how to fix it? This will save you a lot of time and effort. For things like this, it is often best to have more than one perspective.

Another way to get your grammar right is to use a grammar textbook or small manual as you edit. This lets you remember some of the more esoteric rules so you do not trip them up. This does many things that help you, and you can check to see what your essay is reading. They also have the benefit of having different editing and proofreading marks that could be helpful for you. These are something that you definitely should use because they allow you to be consistent and spot what exactly the errors are when you look over your paper again.

The last thing to keep in mind when editing is to be brutal. It is often better to remove words then to add them, and just because you like the way that something sounds does not necessarily mean you should keep it in. What you should be taking care to do is be honest with yourself. Is what you wrote the best thing you could have written, or is there something that you are keeping in just because you like the way it sounds? Looking at your essay with a critical eye and an aim to improve will help you immensely in your editing.
