Theses editing and proofreading tutorial

Editing and proofreading your thesis is an important aspect of good writing. You want to make sure your topic is presented well with good content structure and organization. These aspects help readers understand concepts behind your topic and it helps your thesis be well represented. There are a few basic elements to remember when editing and proofreading your thesis content:

  • Allow yourself plenty of time to read over your work and take breaks when necessary. You can print a hard copy to work from to make it easier on your eyes.

  • Know what your main point is and make sure it is accurately supported. Do you have enough evidence to support your main idea and are additional points mentioned throughout the context provide insight necessary for your topic? Is your thesis statement strong and clear?

  • Does your paper accurately meet the purpose of the assignment? This will include understanding the scope or main purpose for the paper. Does your paper defend an argument, analyze information, or accomplish something different you had in mind?

  • Review your evidence and evaluate how well it supports the thesis. How well does the body of the paper provide insight for the main point of the paper? Did you mention quotes from text you have read and did you remember to properly cite them? Ideas presented should relate to your thesis or main point. Meaning, information mentioned should reflect only on the main idea or thesis so your audience does not get lost within the text.

  • Review ideas and concepts mentioned throughout the paper to ensure they make sense. This means if you have ideas that seem out of place you should consider tightening them for clarity. You want your content to be concise, clear, and easy to follow.

  • Check for grammar errors and word usage mistakes. This includes reviewing misspelled words, punctuation, and other areas of writing that can be cleaned up to improve readability. There are editing handbooks you can review that detail common errors and how to fix them. Keep in mind with spell check programs you may have a word spelled correctly but used improperly; read your content over carefully and use a dictionary if necessary.

  • Try to look at your work from another standpoint. Instead of being the writer review your content as if you are the reader. This can help you understand whether you have satisfied important areas of your work and determine if anything else should be improved.
