How to Edit a Descriptive Essay: Some Good Advice
When you are editing it is important that you follow the tips below:
- The first thing you need to do is take at least one day off after you finish writing your essay. This is important and yet so often overlooked by students. Many students procrastinate and end up putting off their writing until the night before it is due. When that happens they are not able to take a day off in between finishing the final draft and editing it. This is not ideal but if you end up in this situation at least take an hour away from the final piece and do something completely unrelated to the task at hand. This time gives your brain a chance to clear away any thoughts about the essay and instead return to it with a fresh set of eyes.
- Once you have taken some time away from the topic and are no longer completely mentally involved in it you should print off a hard copy. This hard copy should be double spaced so that you have room to mark it up.
Take a red pen and sit down with your favorite cup of tea. As you are reading over your paper be prepared to read it multiple times. Each time you read over it you should search for something different. For example: the first time you read over it you should look for transitional errors or any problems with the format of your content. Look for bigger picture items. The next time you read over it search for smaller picture items such as paragraph length or grammatical errors. Look over a separate time for spelling and typos.
- Get help from someone else. While your fresh set of eyes are great it can be incredibly beneficial for you to get someone else to read over your paper. Ask for help from a friend or family member. Have them read through the paper to find any big errors. Ask them if any part does not make sense or if you left out some background information they might need in order to better understand your paper. Get as many people as you can. If you have someone you trust you is available they might be able to proofread and check for bigger errors but if it is your mother just ask them to read over it and make sure everything flows.
Once you have written your academic essay, do not rush to submit it to your professor. Spend much time searching for grammar and punctuation mistakes.
Rewriting and plagiarism
Plagiarism is a serious issue in the academic world. To avoid this from happening, make sure to rewrite and reword the parts you have copied from the Internet and cite it properly.
