Getting A Template For A Dissertation Research Proposal Online

You’ve worked hard to get where you are, and now there’s only one last, huge hurdle: your dissertation. And, the first hurdle of that hurdle, is creating a proposal. Here are some tips to find a proposal template online and save you time and hassle!

Use the right search terms. Don’t just plug “proposal template” into your search engine; you’ll just be flooded with unhelpful results! Instead, use as many specifics as you can. Make sure to narrow down your search for only dissertation proposals, and you can even search within your chosen field! Here are some tips to maximizing your search terms:

  • Use quotations around any two words that you want to see together, so you can search for “field trip” as a whole instead of searching for the individual words “field” and “trip.”
  • Use a dash (or minus sign) to avoid certain results. So, for example, if you want to learn about Greyhound, the bus company, and don’t want to see results about greyhound, the type of dog, you can type “greyhound –dog”.
  • If you find a website that has good resources but isn’t quite what you need, you can find similar websites by searching “related:” before the URL of the website.

Only trust certain websites. Not all websites were created equally, and you don’t want to end up using the wrong sort of template! A good rule of thumb to follow is that the more information a website has on a number of topics, the more thorough it is and thus more trustworthy. An even better sign that the website is trustworthy is if it’s run by a college, university, or professional organization. Any such website will end in “.edu” or “.org.” This isn’t to say there aren’t plenty of helpful “.com” websites, just that the former tend to be more professional and held to higher standards.

Remember that no two schools are the same. What worked for one candidate at one school might not work for you at your school. All schools have different standards for how they want proposals to look, and what’s expected of them. Make sure to brush up on your school’s rules and regulations, standards, and expectations before using an online template. You can talk to your mentor, or other candidates in your program, about how to make your proposal fit your school’s requirements, or you can look it up on your own. Make sure that, at the end of the day, you’re giving your committee what they want.
